Cleo Overview: AI Budgeting Plus Small Advances

Cleo ranks #8 of 10. It combines a chatty AI money assistant with small interest-free advances of up to $250, no credit check required. It is best for budget-focused users who want spending insights and light overdraft cover alongside an occasional small advance.

How it works

You connect your bank via Plaid (read-only), and Cleo analyzes your spending to offer budgeting insights plus a small advance once you subscribe. First-time advances often start low, from about $20 to $100, and build over time. Repayment usually falls three to 14 days after borrowing.

Costs and fees

A subscription is required to access advances, commonly about $5.99 a month for Cleo Plus, with a higher Builder tier around $14.99. Instant transfers cost roughly $3.99 to $9.99 per advance. Standard delivery is free. Because the limit is small, the subscription and express fee can be a large share of what you actually borrow.

Funding speed, eligibility and availability

Standard delivery takes about three to four business days; instant is same-day for the express fee. You need a linked bank account with qualifying deposit history. In March 2025 the FTC announced a settlement with Cleo over allegations it misled users about advance amounts, speeds, and cancellation, so read the current terms carefully.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong AI budgeting and money-coaching features
  • Free standard delivery available
  • Available nationwide

Cons

  • Subscription required just to access advances
  • Low ceiling, up to $250

Our verdict

Cleo ranks #8. The AI budgeting is genuinely useful and the advances are interest-free, but the low ceiling, required subscription, and a 2025 FTC settlement hold it back from the top tier.
